Free YouTube Music Background Playback Not Working in Canada

YouTube has grown from a simple video-sharing website to an entertainment hub in recent years. The Google-owned company has turned into a platform where everyone downloads millions of videos every day.

This allowed new and young artists to make a name for themselves in an industry where you couldn’t release a track without a music label supporting the artist.

Unsurprisingly, YouTube has become a platform for those who want to share their music with the rest of the world. As a result, the company announced YouTube Music in 2018, which replaced the popular Google Play Music.

The company recently introduced a background playback feature similar to the YouTube app that allows users to listen to their favorite music even when the screen is off. Additionally, Google has said that YouTube Music‘s background playback feature will be available for free to everyone in Canada starting November 3.

However, Canadian users are now reporting that they cannot use the feature. Many say they have already tried reinstalling the app, clearing the cache, restarting and updating the YouTube Music app, but nothing seems to work.

I have been watching this update roll out closely and since yesterday I have not found anyone who can confirm that I have gotten this new version / update with free background playback. Neither on iPhone, nor on iPad, nor on my Android phone. What a big disappointment! YouTubeMusic’s Twitter account keeps mocking users saying, “Oh, shoot, have you tried restarting your device? And “Welp, how about reinstalling the app? I did everything and it still doesn’t work. So my question remains…. where did the update / new version go?

I am trying to play YouTube music for free in the background. The YouTube team announced that on November 3 there will be an update with free background play:
So I checked all day for background play and there is nothing about it that I saw. So how do I activate it or when does it happen? I’m in Canada

At first glance, and according to a Google Platinum product expert, it looks like Google hasn’t made the feature available on November 3 for everyone, but is rolling it out slowly for users.

YouTube also acknowledged the issue and said it is currently under investigation.

In the meantime, those living in Canada will have to wait a few more days before they can take advantage of the free background playback feature on YouTube Music. Nonetheless, we’ll keep an active track of developments on this one and update the story, as and when needed.
