Google has regularly updated its apps with redesigns from Material You and renewed its focus on widgets following Apple’s contribution to the iPhone. The final example comes as YouTube Music is preparing a brand new “Now Playing and Recently Played” widget.
The new design, already available on iOS, was previewed on the Youtube music Twitter account on the day of Android 12 release (see image below), and now 9to5Google has it enabled.
The widget uses a 4×2 grid by default and can be stretched widthwise for a larger grid size, although it does not display any additional content. We see the song currently playing at the top of the widget, along with the Like and Play / Pause buttons. Below these controls are your recently played tracks, so it’s easy to quickly replay a song with this on your home screen.
Having quick access to recent songs and a play / pause button is great, but it would have been nice to see more media controls included. We don’t know when Google plans to release the new widget for everyone, but it will hopefully be soon.
The answer is definitive …
