YouTube Music streaming interrupted on Chromecast, Google TV

It looks like Google’s music service, YouTube Music, is currently having issues streaming music to Chromecast, Google TV, and Android TV devices.

YouTube Music streaming appears to be completely broken currently when streaming to video devices, according to our own testing as well as more than a dozen reports on Google and Reddit forums. The outage does not affect Nest Hub or Google Assistant speakers, in our testing.

Update at 4:30 p.m. PT: Google has confirmed that streaming issues with YouTube Music on Chromecast and Android TV OS platforms should now be resolved.

When trying to cast YouTube Music on a Chromecast with Google TV as well as a TCL Google TV, we observed that both TVs show the YouTube Music splash screen, but the music never starts playing. Eventually, the splash screen times out and the original casting device (an Android phone, in our testing) disconnects from that device as well. In contrast, playback while streaming YouTube Music on a smart speaker or smart display starts in seconds.

User reports of this issue mention the Chromecast Ultra as an affected device, along with Google TV and Android TV devices. Notably, some owners of the Chromecast without a remote say that the standard YouTube app experiences the same issue, although we couldn’t reproduce it in our testing, but YouTube Music has been broke on our Chromecast Ultra.

Google has yet to respond to the situation as far as it can tell. We will update this article as the situation evolves.

Thanks Kenneth!
